Irony

Irony

Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of it's literal meaning. Irony is close to contridiction. It is also some what sarcasm in the form of actions or events. A perfect example of irony would be me drowning at a beach and I work at Dorney park. Or being a butcher and one day getting chopped up. Irony is a outcome of events contrary to what was expected. Irony In some religious contexts, such situations have been seen as the deliberate work of divine providence to emphasize facts, and taunt or toy with humans for not being aware of them in situations where they could easily have been enlightened. Such ironies are often more evident, or more striking, when viewed retrospectively in the light of later developments that make the truth of past situations obvious to all.

Irony is expressed in a poem I read called "Richard Cory". This story was about a man compared metaphorically to a king. It was ironic that he was explained to be so great and conveyed to be such this well together person. But at the end of the story Richard decides to shoot himself in the head, which was a suprise because he was conveyed to have a perfect life. Which makes us think that his action was not something to be expected.

Another example of irony is a short story called 'Lamb to the slaughter" by Roald Dahl. In this story a women named Mary Maloney is a dedicated wife madly in love with her husband and thinks the world of him. One day her husband Mr.Maloney came in one evening while she waited for him anxiously to get home from work and he basically explains that he doesnt want to be with her anymore. It devastated her she was in complete shock. But lead to her knocking him out with a lamb that they were going to eat for dinner. She kills her husband. But cleverly rids of the only evidence which is the lanb she hit him with. She serves the lamb for supper to the detectives that came to visit her house about her husbands death. It is very ironic because the last thing you would expect would be detectives eating the evidence.

This cartoon is very ironic because a guy dressed as a bat runs into a bat dressed as a kid. It's less than likely that would happen. It's ironic because that would be the least thing you would expect seeing if you were disguised as a bat. Which is the total opposite which is very humorous irony.

In conclusion irony can be humorous or devastating as shown in my essay. It can be as hilarious as a man dressed as a bat seeing his opposite or as tradgic as a women killing her husband and ridding evidence in a unusual way.
